Winters of My Life

A quick snapshot of Howard Weamer's life in the backcountry of Yosemite. For 35 years he has spent his winters there as a hutkeeper. I enjoyed every shot and second of the video, it was over way too quickly!

Disco Nails

Here are some facts: this is a self-indulgent post and there are going to be a lot of nail polish pictures.

Not pictured is what my fortune cookie said: "A schedule defends from chaos and whim." Oof, that is pretty didactic and dreary. What happened to, "you will soon be surrounded by good friends and laughter?" I've never thought whim was such a bad thing and it certainly doesn't hang out with the likes of chaos. Back to girls' night, yeaaahh, girls' night! Nail polish, chinese food and backgammon. I had fun, here's the proof.

Twelve Chairs

Yesterday I was in Fort Point and decided to check out Twelve Chairs. It's an interior design studio, but they also carry some of my favorite things, like Rifle Paper Co., locally-sorced designs and vintage bottles. It's exciting to see fun and interesting places popping up in this neighborhood.

Shades of Gray

I don't take many black-and-white photographs myself, but I do have a desktop folder full of 'em. I think the absence of color is one of portraiture's best tools. The picture of a young Julie Andrews would have been just as beautiful in color, but in B/W it also looks timeless. And in the last picture? Well, I have never seen such a good argument for rolled pants. Or, for owning a pipe. Or, for rolling your pants, smoking a pipe and hanging out in the woods, I'm sold. Sources below.

That's Life, That's What All The People Say

I bought these two Life magazines when I was up in Portland. Haven't read any of the articles yet, I'm mesmerized by the advertisements. Oh, the past! The cigarette ads remind me of one of my favorite scenes from Mad Men where Sally Draper is playing with a plastic dry cleaning bag over her head and Betty says something like, "You better not have wrinkled my clothes." This stuff never ceases to make me laugh. Now I'm trying to decide how I should frame the covers. Maybe thickish, white borders? What do you think?

Some Geography

My wonderful, science-inclined friend tipped me off to an Image of the Day site posted by NASA's Earth Observatory. A hurricane from the vantage point of a satellite? Sure! China at night? Well, don't mind if I do. Is NASA using photoshop, because these colors are great.

On A Snow Day

Shovel, shovel some more. Assemble proper hot chocolate making supplies. Oh, remember you made garlic knots last night, eat those. Find your copy of For Love or Money, starring Michael J. Fox and watch it. Quote, "I don't scurry. I take the subway like any other animal." Sled? Build a snow fort? Adopt the lazy nonchalance of your cat. Get cozy.

Man About Town

Hello, Kilian Martin and those spins. Skateboarding meets 1950's style in Man About Town's #7 issue. With color grading plus Ricky Nelson's "It's All In The Game," this video is a delight.
